Bakery Burglary: The Great King Cake Heist in New Orleans
A thief stole seven king cakes from a New Orleans bakery along with cash and a case of vodka during a break-in last week. The thief made off with as many king cakes as he could carry, prompting the bakery to jokingly say, “Our king cakes are just that good.”
The stolen king cakes, traditionally associated with Mardi Gras celebrations, are rings of pastry adorned with purple, green, and gold. They often contain a tiny plastic baby hidden inside, adding to their appeal during the Carnival season. The thief’s bold move sparked humor on social media, with one individual playfully claiming responsibility and demanding a lifetime supply of king cakes in exchange for the return of the hidden babies.
While the theft may have been a mischievous act, it sheds light on the significance of king cakes in New Orleans culture during Carnival. The season kicks off on January 6th, 12 days after Christmas, and culminates in Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, a day of feasting before the fasting period of Lent. The stolen king cakes may have been taken for their value and deliciousness, but their true worth lies in their connection to the vibrant and storied traditions of Mardi Gras in New Orleans.Posted in Crime & Law Entertainment Culture & Travel Health & Food by
