Sea lion sunbathes on patrol car
A sea lion was captured after motorists found it flopping along the road northeast of Los Banos. Apparently the sea lion had swum 100 kilometres upriver from the ocean.
While the police waited for a marine rescue team the 135-kilogram animal was baking in the sun on the back of a patrol car. Fortunately the animal appeared to be in good condition.The animal was captured and will stay in the Marine Mammal Centre for a few days for some check-ups before being realeased back into the ocean.
Cynthia Schramm, employee of the Marine Mammal Center near San Francisco said a possible explanation for the animal's unusual trip is that it was going after some tasty looking fish and got lost in the process. "We have seen it a few times earlier that sea lions were found more than 80 kilometres inland," she said.Posted in Animals by
